Happy Holidays 2003

The "Nisse" are good Norwegian trolls that look after the barn animals if they are rewarded with a bowl of sweet Christmas pudding each year.

Our friend Bjørn in Norway sent us his Norwegian Christmas scene depicting the barn trolls called the Nisse celebrating their Christmas. Legend says that the Nisse will happily take care of things around the farm and they only ask a nice bowl of Christmas pudding in return. Many thanks to Bjørn for sharing this with us.

Our Holiday Wish for you

We wish all our friends and family a Wonderful and Happy holiday season and a most prosperous New Year.

Our News

  • Europe 2003 Trip Highlights

    • Skiing in the Austrian Alps: We had a ball!

    • We "skied" at the Tauplitz Ski resort near our 'home away from home' at Elfi and Hubert's ski lodge in Bad Mitterndorf, Austria.

    • Roland in Europe - Roland took a couple of weeks off his work-term and joined us in Salzburg. We had a great time with him in Austria, Germany and Italy as he got to meet his family and make acquaintances with both sides of his family, the old folks and the young generation! A rare opportunity!
    •
    • Venice was a romantic stop! Giovanni, our gondolier, showed us the ins and outs of Venice canals. It was super! The trip through Northern Italy by car was mystical, the art and architecture in Venice was totally capturing and the 'calzones' were absolutely worth a trip back!

The Grand Cafe on San Mrcus Square Venice Italy

    • A Great Big Wiener Sandwich - Our favorite food in Austria was the warm fresh leberkæse ( meatloaf) on a bun! Well worth a trip to the local Metzger and then some fresh brot from the Bakerei for their fresh buns with some great European cheeses. Europe is a culinary experience from every

    • Terrific Tuscany - The Tuscan food was very wonderful! We enjoyed the sights and smells of everything in Florence, San Gimignano and the gorgeous surrounding Tuscan countryside. Dean thought the some of the statues had some resemblance to himself.......

      Notice the resemblance?

  • Renaissance Revival

    • Before
    • Above is the craft as we found her in the spring. The solid Honduras Mahogany was all slopped over with the blue paint and a lot of things needed cleaning and tightening up. As the real quality emerged a name change was in order so we asked the boat Gods and got permission to rename her the "Renaissance", a much more fitting name.

    • We spent a lot of time this fall retrofitting our 1959 Chris Craft 10 meter yacht, "Renaissance", The twin 350 GM V8 engines are currently being refurbished in the shop and we hope to be 'on the waves' in early spring. and maybe in the next antique wooden boat parade

    • We found a lot of Chris Craft parts like name plates and logos available on Ebay. Reading up on the Chris Craft items and parts on Ebay also gave us a well needed education about Chris Craft wooden boats through the years.

  • Whazup at the Gingerbread Cottage

    • Euro Antique Lites: While in Europe this past year we found a great many antique light fixtures in super shape. They replaced the rather plain lighting we had and add  a lot of flavour and character to our home.
    • Family Heirlooms: Vanessa's mother is 86 and lives in Bavaria near  King Ludwig's famous castle Neuschwanstein. She had a lot of the family heirlooms and antiques in storage at the home where she is living.
      • At Mother's request, we brought them home in a big box we made. It was a 5' x 5' x 7.5'  wooden container we made at a lumber mill in Southern Bavaria and filled it with Vanessa's family furniture and heirlooms. We then had it picked up by Schenker Spedition, a large Austrian trucking firm, who sent a truck from Munich that transported it to Rotterdam, then it went by boat to Montreal and by train to Vancouver where we picked it up and brought it home. It was a learning experience to ship a package that size from overseas that turned out pleasant and was quite interesting. The family heirlooms really add a warm and interesting flair to the cottage.
      • DSC03282.JPG (331321 bytes)

    • Cockatoo Stew: Our cockatoo's, Merlin and Madam Mim (Casper as she likes to be called) are the most obnoxious creatures we have ever come across. Why we do not throw them in the stew I will never know, but they keep dodging the bullet day after day!

    • Minka: Our little stray cat Minka passed away in mid December. She had stayed with us for six months. She was a beautiful little spirit that added so much to our lives and will be fondly remembered for a long time.
    • Gingerbread Theatre: We have a few movies on our regular news page. Click here to view them.

  • The Kids

    • Roland spent the fall in Kelowna for his last engineering work term. He will graduate this spring as a computer engineer. All the best to Roland.

    • Crystal, Roland's girlfriend of many years has become a part of the family in the past year. We welcome Crystal and wish them both the best of everything.

      crystalandrolandlit.jpg (211295 bytes)

    • Krista in her last year U of Regina. This years trip to Italy and Austria, we will be taking Krista with us for 3 weeks, it will be great exposure for her as an art Student, as well as a lot of fun! She graduates in April from a 4 year Arts and English course. All the best to Krista.

      DSC02782.JPG (44019 bytes)

    • Cory visited us in Victoria this spring. He stayed on our yacht in Fisherman's Wharf. We had a great visit. Cory lives in Calgary Alberta..
