1905 Heritage Duplex Design

Why stay at a Victoria Bed and Breakfast?

Isn't it kind of awkward staying in someone's home? Won't I feel strange walking in and standing there in the middle of someone's living room? Will the rooms have privacy or can everyone hear me brush my teeth? Will I have a curfew? Where will I park my car?

In many cases these concerns are valid... but at the Gingerbread Cottage Bed and Breakfast, you enter directly on grade level and sign in at our front desk in our common lobby area - just like a hotel - only cuter. You do not have to go through any private areas during your stay with us. Privacy at our establishment is excellent because our guest rooms have secondary hallways separating them and duplex "party walls" between them.

Although we do expect all guests to be quiet after a reasonable hour, curfew is non existent at the Gingerbread Cottage and we have ample street parking.

The good part about staying at our B&B is being warmly welcomed when you arrive after a trying day of travel, staying in a friendly, safe, family atmosphere, getting information on good local attractions, events, shopping and restaurants. And, of course, being spoiled by our excellent culinary offerings at breakfast.

Having owned a large hotel and several restaurants, we provide a professional experience to all our guests. An excellent value.

The Gingerbread Cottage is one of Victoria's fine heritage homes that has been converted from a duplex to a great example of one of the many fine bed and breakfasts Victoria Canada. Built in 1905 with Arts and Crafts type architecture, it is a rare example of an early "side by side duplex" home.

An interesting anecdote about the original building design is that it was called a "shotgun duplex" The "shotgun" reference indicates that if you stood at the front door and fired a shotgun to the back, the pellets would exit the back door. That has changed somewhat over the years with various renovations but it is worth noting.

Being of duplex design provides great zoning for bed and breakfast rooms as there are 2 separate stairways and entrances. The guest rooms themselves benefit from the sound dampening "party wall" which separated the two houses and the lack of traffic on the stairs. As well the deluxe room comes with a private hallway to provide further privacy and sound control.

"Chuckie" our 34 year old Moluccan Cockatoo loves a scratch from everyone.

Casper our fifteen year old Umbrella cockatoo  does her funny Cockatoo show with Dean every morning at breakfast!
